Sustainable Development in Canada Sample Paper
The article focuses on the world’s attempt at combating climate change, as well as Canada’s failure in helping of the same, despite being a member of the team that proclaimed such assistance. In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development coined the phrase ‘sustainable development’ as being the development which meets the needs of present generations, without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own (Kyba, Dwivedi, et al., 2015). The WCED (1987) opened our eyes to real environmental concerns and attempted to have actions taken in the same regard. The Rio ‘Earth Summit’ of 1992, further maintained the need for sustainable development.

Canada’s position in the global environmental issues has had no effect (Baias& Parent, 2012). The paper focuses on three critics, who have challenged Canada’s role in implementing, or lack thereof, of the WDEC (1987) and the Rio Earth Summit (1992). Some of the criticisms include the obstruction of efforts that can lower greenhouse gas emissions and the total inability to live up to the 1992 dreams. Continuous economic growth has hampered sustainable development and truly, Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has failed in its mandates. It is tough to see the good that the DFO and the government does in general, since negative results outway the positive. Economic and social growth is coming at the expense of sustainable development (Kyba, Dwivedi, et al., 2015).
