Two competencies within the NONPF that I have met include Ethical competencies and Technology and Information Competencies. Ethical competencies are an important aspect of patient care. As an advanced provider, PMHNPs integrate ethical principles in decision making while evaluating and treating complex mental health diagnoses across the lifespan. Within my personal clinical experience, I have incorporated ethics while maintaining confidentiality and assessing and reporting safety concerns. For example, while working the chemical dependency unit at Brentwood, confidentiality was maintained while performing family and group therapy sessions. Additionally, while working throughout the Brentwood facility suicidal ideations were frequently assessed. Patients at risk for suicide were placed on enhanced precautions, and some were placed on a 1:1. Knowing personal limits, seeking consultation, and boundaries were also ethical components I utilized in clinical practice. Technology and Information Literacy Competencies are also crucial in providing expanded psychiatric services across Louisiana. Many of my clinical hours were obtained using telepsychiatry services. Therefore, educating patients and various staff on the utilization of patient EHR portals and zoom apps contributed to patient understanding and enhanced psychiatric services. Escripts, genetic testing, and electronic lab forms are other technical features that required patient education and follow up. In addition, when utilizing virtual patient care services, I became knowledgeable of the differing practice laws/requirements for PMHNPs across different states. Furthermore, technology and information competency involve searching web-based data banks, research articles, and up-to-date applications for the best evidence-based practices. One website/application I have found to be particularly useful in clinical practice is the Epocrates site for medication information and dosing. Concerns

Concerns that I have include utilizing the correct medication for each diagnosis across the lifespan. At times it is difficult to decipher which medications should be used over others, especially when considering current home medications and existing medical diagnoses. I am thankful for applications such as Epocrates, and I have used this app many times to determine drug-drug interactions. I know that with clinical experience and practice, prescribing will become second nature. National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competency of Quality Essay

Desired Clinical Experience

I enjoy my current telepsych clinical experience, however I would like to gain more inpatient/high acuity knowledge.  Due to the lack of available preceptors at Brentwood, it has been difficult to find a preceptor locally. However, I do think experience in both is necessary in this day and age. I am thankful for all of my clinical experiences thus far!

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties or NONPF competency that I feel I have met in the program is that of quality. It is one of the nine main competencies a nurse is supposed to have regardless of their level of practice. The meaning of quality is care that can be relied upon to produce the desired patient outcomes. This is care that is backed by evidence from scholarly peer-reviewed and published sources (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). It is care that falls under the banner of best practice or evidence-based practice. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ, 2018), the Institute of Medicine or IOM stated that quality care is timely, effective, efficient, patient-centered, equitable, and safe. These are the so-called six domains of quality care that I have applied throughout the program and I feel that I have been able to achieve desired patient outcomes as a result of that all the time. I have met this competency of quality by making avoidance of preventable errors my topmost practice priority. Since I became aware of the IOM report of 1999 titled To Err Is Human, my outlook to practice has always been to avoid errors that can be prevented. The IOM report stated that at the time about 98,000 preventable deaths were occurring in healthcare settings due to preventable errors by healthcare workers (Palatnik, 2016). I am thus always on the lookout for anything that may compromise patient safety and comfort. National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competency of Quality Essay

Going into the semester, the areas I am most concerned about are application of theory to practice as well as mastering the decision-making process on appropriate assessment tools. I am however up to the task and I think that I will be able to overcome my concerns through hard work and dedication. To that end, the desired clinical experiences I need involve more real-life contact with real-life patients so that I can apply my theoretical knowledge (cognitive domain) to practice (affective and psychomotor domains).
