Defining Health and Health Promotion

The concept of health has been variously defined including by the World Health Organization or WHO. However, my own personal definition would be that health is holistic completeness encompassing wellness physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, socially, culturally, economically, and interpersonally. In other words, health does not mean only the absence of a physical or psychiatric illness. On the other hand, I can define health promotion as the empowerment of populations and communities so that they can be able to take charge of their health now and of the course that it will take tomorrow. Factors Considered in Developing Definitions

The factors that I considered in developing the above to definitions are the metaparadigms in Madeleine Leininger’s Transcultural Nursing (TCN) theory (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019). The theory states that when a person is unwell, only care that is holistic (encompassing all the domains mentioned in the definition) will bring them back to complete wellbeing. It therefore follows that lack of wellness in any of the domains will mean that the individual lacks health. In defining health promotion, the factors I considered are related to patient advocacy (Addario et al., 2017). Nurses are by default the foremost patient advocates as they are the ones that spend the most time with patients. Advocacy or championing the wellbeing of patients includes empowering them to take charge of their health; for instance through lifestyle alterations. Culture Care Diversity And Universality Essay

Potential Barriers Preventing Individuals from Achieving the Above Definition of Health and Health Promotion

These barriers include low educational achievement (a social determinant of health), negative cultural beliefs (such as the belief that vaccinations cause barrenness), a convoluted sense of sexuality (for instance, men believing that consenting to a rectal examination to screen for prostate cancer is not manly), amongst others. These barriers hinder health promotion initiatives and also prevent individuals from achieving a complete state of health. Culture Care Diversity And Universality Essay
